All the bells and whistles of some printers are nice features, but sometimes price is the most important aspect.  For buyers who want basic features in an extremely affordable inkjet printer, the HP Deskjet D1660 may be just the right choice.  It offers fast print speeds and excellent quality at a price that is nearly unbelievable.  In fact, HP D1660 ink may be more expensive than the printer itself.

Print speeds are very impressive, considering the price.  At up to 20 pages per minute for black and 16 pages per minute for color, it is very fast indeed.  A wide variety of media types and sizes are supported, including labels, cards, transparencies, envelopes and others.  It can also handle borderless 4×6 printing when using tear-tab paper, which makes it easy to print full-color photos for friends and family.

Heavy users may want to look elsewhere, as the monthly duty cycle of this unit is only 750 pages per month.  It is certainly not designed for high-volume use, although it should suffice for the average home user.  Paper capacity is a bit small at only 80 sheets.  The output tray can only hold up to 15 sheets as well, which could be an annoyance for those who frequently print multi-page documents.  None of these are major flaws but they are worth considering before purchase.

HP D1660 ink cartridges are quite affordable, though not the least expensive in its class.  With a page yield of only 200 pages, you may have to replace Deskjet D1660 ink cartridges often.  In fact, when buying OEM HP D1660 ink at full price, it is likely that replacing the ink will cost more than the printer itself.  Using third-party compatible Deskjet D1660 ink will keep costs lower, however.

For a budget-friendly basic inkjet printer, the HP D1660 is quite impressive.  Its quality may not match that of more expensive models, but it certainly offers more speed and features than one would expect for the price.
