Dell 5110cn Toner Printer Review

The Dell 5110cn is designed for the high-volume small or medium office. It has the paper capacity to handle busy environments, with a 500-page main drawer. It also has a 150-sheet multipurpose tray for loading alternate sizes or types of media. Optional paper drawers can be added, with capacities of 500 or 1,000 sheets, resulting in a printer capable of very high volumes of printing indeed. This should be appealing for some small offices, as they can purchase the base model printer and add more capacity as their needs grow in the future, though its upfront cost is higher than many competing models. This is balanced somewhat by its lower toner costs, however, which will be mentioned later.

The size of the printer may be a concern for smaller offices. It measures a large 16.9 inches by 22.8 inches by 19.6 inches, and weighs a hefty 71.4 pounds, so it is certainly not a printer for small spaces.

Toner costs are where the Dell 5110cn, and most Dell printers for that matter, gets a leg up on the competition. Dell 5110cn toner cartridges have a capacity of 8,000 and 10,000 pages for color and black, respectively. High-yield cartridges are available, however, with capacities of 12,000 and 18,000 pages for color and black cartridges, respectively. This results in a much lower cost per page than most of the competition, and even other Dell models. Even Dell 3110cn toner cartridges, with similar capacities to the standard cartridges, have a much higher cost per page, and compared to the high-yield cartridges, the difference is staggering. Buyers will want to calculate the toner savings over competing models when comparing prices, as the Dell 5110cn will likely have a much lower cost of ownership over the lifetime of the printer, despite its higher upfront costs.

Professional reviewers have much to say about the Dell 5110cn. Tomshardware.com thought it was a worthy successor to the 3110cn. They liked its built-in duplexing and paper capacity upgrade options, and mentioned that it is a very inexpensive printer to operate, despite its high upfront cost.

expertreviews.co.uk thought it had the strengths of the previous 5100cn, but also improved on some weaknesses. They liked its robust network support and excellent print quality. They also thought it was an excellent choice for a high-volume workgroup.

Print quality is excellent, with extremely sharp and detailed text. Color quality is about average for a laser printer, with accurate colors and decent photo quality. Print speed is around 40 pages per minute for black and 35 pages per minute for color, making it a very fast color printer.
