Canon BJC-55

The Canon BJC-55 is a portable color inkjet printer designed for travelers or for anyone who needs to print on the go.  Ultra-compact and very lightweight, it can run on battery power for absolute portability.  Print speed is a bit slow, at up to 5.5 pages per minute for black and 2 pages per minute for color.  Canon BJC-55 ink is somewhat expensive on a cost per page basis.

The unit measures only 2 inches by 11.9 inches by 4.4 inches and weighs a very light 2.2 pounds.  At this size, it could be carried in a large laptop bag.  It can connect to a computer or laptop by either USB or infrared for convenience.  There is a handy power lock that keeps the machine from being turned on accidentally, which is especially important considering it can run from battery power.  Its printing resolution is limited to 760 by 320 dpi, so don’t expect extremely sharp prints, but its portability outweighs its faults.

Canon BJC-55 ink cartridges are very inexpensive, but their capacities are small, which results in a fairly high cost per page.  Canon BJC-55 ink cartridges are divided into a single black and single color printer ink cartridge.

In their review of the Canon BJC-55, PCWorld liked its portability and the ability to add a scanning unit.  They also found its software to be much better designed than competing models, and its photo quality to be impressive.  They disliked the clarity of black text and that paper needs to be fed one sheet at a time.

Overall, the Canon BJC-55 is an impressive model with an extreme amount of portability, without sacrificing much in terms of print quality.  For users who need to print on the road, it could be an essential piece of gear, but Canon BJC-55 ink costs could get high with heavy use.
